THE COLLEGE DEMOCRATS OF NEW YORK COMMEND DCCC PUBLICIZING REPUBLICANS AGAINST PELL GRANTS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PLEASE PROVIDE PELL GRANTS– THE COLLEGE DEMOCRATS OF NEW YORK COMMEND DCCC PUBLICIZING REPUBLICANS AGAINST PELL GRANTS
The Executive Board of the College Democrats of New York commends the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for publically addressing Republican representatives against Pell Grants in New York.
NEW YORK, NY– This morning Roll Call reported that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will hit 15 Republican congressmen and women who voted to freeze Pell Grants by placing those ads in college newspapers in their districts. As college students, many of our members and their families rely on federal student aid to pay a part of our college educations. We believe that outreach by House Democrats to our college campuses is admirable and much needed.
The DCCC’s new ad effort targets two Republican New York congressmen who represent districts with prominent universities: Rep. Lee Zeldin’s (R-NY1) district has SUNY Stony Brook University; Rep. John Katko’s (R-NY24) district has Syracuse University. SUNY Stony Brook’s in-state tuition costs $4,215 and out-of-state tuition costs $10,925 for the 2013-2014 school year (excluding the cost of housing, meal plan, insurance, academic supplies). The school’s average Pell Grant was approximately $3000 for that year, and for many students that amount could be the reason they can afford an education.
College Democrats of New York Vice President and senior at SUNY Stony Brook Kevin Gomez comments, “Personally, I wouldn't be able to afford to attend Stony Brook without the Pell Grant. I have taken out the max amount of loans that the government has allowed and I still have to pay out of pocket on top of that. I work shifts at a restaurant to pay for those costs. This is at a public school where tuition is supposed to be affordable; I can only imagine the cost incurred by students at private universities.”
For the upcoming school year, Syracuse University will cost $61,242, where even the max Pell Grant of $5,775 barely covers 10% of annual tuition. Every year, tuition at universities around New York rise, and a Pell Grant freeze would hurt every student. Other New York Republican representatives
Elise Stefanik (R-NY21) and Tom Reed (R-NY23) have also voted against Pell Grants, and their districts encompass both private and public universities such as Cornell University, Ithaca College, Elmira College, SUNY Plattsburgh, St. Lawrence University, and SUNY Potsdam.
We ask that students contact their congressmen and women to fight for Pell Grants. We ask that our congressmen and women fight on our behalf. Students and our families need federal assistance in order to invest in our futures.
