ALBANY, NY—Today the College Democrats of New York express our support for former Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Broome County Executive, Barbara Fiala and her campaign for State Senate in the 52nd district which encompasses Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware County.

The seat has been vacated by Senator Tom Libous who was found guilty Wednesday of lying to federal investigators.

“The Southern Tier needs strong leadership now more than ever,” said Jamie Zieno, President of the College Democrats of New York. “As a lifelong resident of Chenango County, I believe Fiala’s distinguished record makes her an excellent candidate for state senate.”

Barbara Fiala started her career in public service as Broome County Clerk in 1997. She held that position for six years before going on to serve as Broome County Executive from 2005 to 2011. In February 2011, she was nominated by Governor Cuomo and confirmed by the New York state legislature to serve as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, where she served for 4 years.

“With strong roots in the middle class, Fiala has the commitment and experience to revitalize the 52nd district and its economy. We echo Governor Cuomo’s sentiments: We will do whatever we can to elect Barbara Fiala.”

As an affiliate of College Democrats of America, the College Democrats of New York work to empower young progressives and elect Democrats across New York State and the country.
