The College Democrats of New York kicked off their 2016 convention on Friday at The State University at Albany, welcoming students and prolific speakers from across New York state.
On Friday prominent Democratic figures like Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) and Basil Smikle, Chairman of the New York State Democratic Party, channeled the excitement into calls to action to elect new Democrats in a number of competitive Congressional and state races.
CDNY then welcomed Rep. Paul Tonko (NY-21), Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Congressional candidates Zephyr Teachout and Mike Derrick Saturday morning. Chapters also had the opportunity to participate in specialized breakout sessions, meeting with other Democrats from their regions and discussing pressing issues with the CDNY women’s, labor, LGBTQ, and people of color caucuses.
“It’s always inspiring to see such enthusiasm from our members,” said Jamie Zieno, outgoing President of the College Democrats of New York. “Now it’s time to take the next step, and make sure we do everything we can to elect a new wave of Democrats in November.”
