NYS Assemblymember and NYC Mayor's Youth Liaison Honored at the College Democrats of New York's NYC Summer Fundraiser
NEW YORK, NY––Last week, the College Democrats of New York (CDNY) hosted its third annual Red, White, and Democratic Blue Summer Fundraiser. At the event, NY Assemblymember for the 79th District and DNC Vice Chair, Michael Blake, and Eden Tesfaye, Youth Liaison for Mayor Bill de Blasio were commended for their work and made CDNY honorary members.
Claudia Stankiewicz, President of CDNY, remarked, "I am so proud of our team for putting together such a successful evening. College Democrats from all over the state, candidates for city council and their staff, and consistent supporters of CDNY were in attendance. We congratulate Assemblymember and DNC Vice Chair Michael Blake and Mayor de Blasio's Youth Liaison Eden Tesfaye for exemplifying qualities that College Democrats are inspired by, thus becoming honorary members. Thank you to Patrick Jordan, President of New York State Young Democrats, and Marv McMoore Jr., President of College Democrats of America, for speaking about the growing partnership between young leaders. I am proud to stand with so many exceptional individuals who want to prove that College Democrats are going to make a difference in the world as the next generation of progressive leaders in New York State."
As Michael Blake and Eden Tesfaye accepted their honorary member induction, they spoke about the importance of agency, despite one’s age.
“If you want [progressive change], you’ve got to do it locally. It starts with every state assembly race, every city council race. It starts with joining your community board,” said Tesfaye. The College Democrats of New York recognizes the importance of local elections, having named NY-22 a priority race.
Assemblymember Blake reminded the room of college students that as millennial Democrats we must assert that “[our] days on Earth might have been short but they are long enough to understand that I demand justice and equality and all the same opportunities as someone else.”
Progressive, millennial Democrats have great potential and CDNY will continue to empower its chapters to push for local, state, and national change alongside their honorary members.
