Statement from the College Democrats of New York on the NYC Terror Attack
We are appalled by the terrorist attack that took place in lower Manhattan on Tuesday that took the lives of 8 people and injured at least a dozen more. Our hearts go out with sincerest condolences to those families, individuals, and others who were impacted by this tragic and horrible attack.
In response, the president has proposed ending visa programs and continued his vague rhetorical promise of “extreme vetting.” In doing so, he not only ignores practical policy solutions but also attacks the diverse fabric that makes New York City unlike any other city on Earth.
Robert Liford, CDNY New York City Region Chair, commented, “New Yorkers understand the benefits of a society that’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and evermore inclusive. Our strength will carry us through this tragedy, the way it has in times before. It is now incumbent on us to prevent the character of our city, and indeed our country, from changing during these trying times.”
Terrorism has no place in our country, but neither does hatred and vitriol. We must unite with love, support, and selflessness in these times of national difficulty. This attack, and the president’s response to it, will not diminish our strength and must not change our character.
