COLLEGE DEMS CALL ON ULSTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE MIKE HEIN TO RUN FOR CONGRESS
Albany, N.Y. — The College Democrats of New York unanimously voted to call on Ulster County Executive Mike Hein to run for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat in the 2016 election. The seat is being vacated by incumbent Congressman Chris Gibson and spans across 11 counties from the Capital Region to the Southern Tier and to the Hudson Valley.
In a letter to County Executive Hein, CDNY pledged to make the race for the 19th District a ‘Priority Race,’ should Hein choose to run. CDNY is prepared to commit the time and resources necessary to elect a proven leader like Hein to Congress.
“Young people across the 19th Congressional District deserve a representative who adequately represents them,” said CDNY President Jamie Zieno.“Republicans like John Faso, Pete Lopez, and Andrew Heaney are the exact opposite of adequate representation. They oppose progress on issues such as college affordability, LGBT rights, women’s rights, and the environment issues young people truly care about.”
The College Democrats join a coalition of leaders urging County Executive Hein to run for U.S. Congress and he has since said he is considering a run. Given the swingseat nature of the 19th district, it is a major pickup opportunity for the Democratic Party. The 19th Congressional District has been rated as a “tossup district” by the leading national predictor model Cook Political.
Since taking office in 2008, County Executive Mike Hein has had a strong record of accomplishments, including tax cuts, private sector job growth, and moving Ulster County’s energy usage to 100% renewable sources. CDNY is confident that County Executive Hein can provide the constituents of the 19th District with representation in Washington that they can be proud of. We strongly urge Hein to run for the seat.
