"Democratic congressional candidate Mike Derrick launched his campaign with one staff member on Wednesday.
“We’re a two-man band right now,” he said in a telephone interview.
The campaign picked up a chorus of background singers on Thursday when College Democrats of New York announced it selected the 21st District race as “a top target” for the 2016 election cycle.
“We think Mike Derrick is the guy who is going to turn this race into one of the most competitive in the nation,” said Jamie Zieno, the group’s president, in a telephone interview after the group issued a news release. “This is going to be our priority race for 2016.”
Zieno said members from across the state will travel to the district to provide ground support.
“What we have access to is hundreds of volunteers and tons of people who are willing to intern on a campaign and really get involved,” he said.
Derrick, a retired Army colonel from Peru, in Clinton County, is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, in November 2016.
The Green Party candidate is Matt Funiciello, a bread company owner and radio talk show host from Glens Falls."
