College Democrats of New York’s Statement on the Assassination in Minnesota

NEW YORK CITY, NY — The College Democrats of New York are outraged and devastated by the brutal and deliberate act of political violence committed against Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, as well as State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.

Political violence of any kind is never acceptable. It is not only an attack on individuals but the values of open discourse, peaceful dissent, and representative government. As threats of public officials rise, we must continue to confront the growing culture of extremism that stokes this violence, from online radicalization to downright reckless rhetoric from those in power.

Disagreement is fundamental to democracy; however, it must never cross the line into violence, intimidation, or terror.

Choosing violence will always be the weakest presentation of difference

Speaker Hortman and Senator Hoffman's leadership and service exemplify the kind of principled, people-first governance that should be celebrated, not silenced. The fact that their lives and those of their loved ones were endangered as a result of that service is absolutely unacceptable.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of Speaker and Mr. Hortman, Senator and Mrs. Hoffman, as well as our allies at the College Democrats of Minnesota (CDMN). We stand beside you in this moment of grief and recommit ourselves to building a future grounded in safety, justice, and honor.
