Statement from the College Democrats of New York on the Midtown Manhattan Shooting

NEW YORK, NY — College Democrats of New York (CDNY) and College Democrats of America (CDA) are devastated by the senseless and tragic loss of life in last night’s mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan, which included the murder of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam and several other innocent New Yorkers. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families, loved ones, and all others affected by this horrific act of violence.

This tragedy resulted from the unchecked proliferation of firearms that is plaguing the United States. It serves as yet another painful reminder of the ongoing gun violence epidemic that continues to claim innocent lives in New York City and across the country. Such destruction was made possible by the flow of high-caliber firearms across state lines, from jurisdictions with weak gun safety regulations into our communities.

New York State has worked tirelessly to enact and uphold strong and sensible gun safety laws and regulations. However, efforts have been repeatedly undercut by states that neglect to implement fundamental safeguards for public safety and the preservation of human life. Until decisive federal action is taken to halt the illegal trafficking of deadly weapons, tragedies such as this will persist and continue to threaten the lives of every American, regardless of where they live.

We are grateful for the first responders and law enforcement officers who acted with courage and compassion in the face of terror. Their bravery reflects not only the very best of New York but the very best of the United States.

But thoughts and prayers are not enough. Decisive, coordinated, national action on gun violence is long overdue.
