The College Democrats of New York on the Bombing of Iran

FORDOW, NATANZ, and ISFAHAN, IRAN — On Inauguration Day, we watched as Donald Trump touted his plans for peace. America was promised "no new wars." Yet last night, we watched as the United States launched airstrikes on Iran, joining Israel in its war and rapidly escalating the overseas conflict.

As college students, most of us have only ever known an occupied Middle East. Now, we watch as the Trump administration attempts to perpetuate this situation. Once again, the few have risked the lives of the many by entering a war unsupported by Americans across party lines.

These unilateral actions from Trump only inflame tensions with the Iranian government and endanger millions of Americans and Iranians in the region. Currently, there are 40,000 American troops stationed in the region that are vulnerable to counterattacks from Iran. Their lives are now on the line.

We urge every federal lawmaker to join their colleagues in supporting the bipartisan War Powers Resolutions authored by Rep. Thomas Massie and Sen. Tim Kaine. These resolutions would remove U.S. Armed Forces from actions against Iran, restrict the executive branch's ability to authorize military action without congressional approval, and advocate for an immediate return to peaceful, non-military solutions and diplomacy.

Let us learn from history and the mistakes made at the beginning of this century, rather than allow them to be repeated. Trump must not be allowed to start another "forever war" that destabilizes foreign nations and puts American soldiers at risk. We condemn these airstrikes and call on every Congressional Democrat to do the same.
